What does “foam-free wedding flowers” mean?

I’m am super proud to be Lubbock’s only foam-free wedding florist! But what does “foam-free” mean?

Floral foam is the green foam blocks that most florists use as their base (also called mechanics) for all their arrangements. Without mechanics, flower stems aren’t as easy to arrange in the beautiful shapes you see most wedding arrangements.

Floral foam also provides hydration (water!) to the stems.

So, why is it bad?

Floral foam is single-use and does not biodegrade (it takes thousands of years to break down) and when it breaks down into microplastics it pollutes the water and environment. It is made of harmful chemicals like formaldehyde.

There are some great alternatives to floral foam! Here are the kinds I use:

Water containers: vases, water tubes, tupperware, and other containers hold water and can be simple bases for floral arrangements.

Chicken wire: I use chicken wire to form shapes and provide stability for flower stems.

Oshun pouches and moss: these alternatives create even more stable bases for structures like wedding arches or ground meadows.

I chose to be foam-free after reading about the environmental and sustainability issues around floral foam. My designs are less harmful to the environment and just as stable, keep the flowers hydrated, and are super beautiful!
